Pushes for Practical Climate Policy

TasFarmers has urged the Tasmanian Government to recognise the full climate contribution of agriculture in its review of the Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008.

In its submission, the state’s peak farming body called for climate policy that accounts for both emissions and carbon sequestration on farms, and supports practical, harmonised data systems.

“Many farmers are already storing more carbon than they emit,” said TasFarmers CEO Nathan Calman. “We need climate rules that reflect that reality and help producers meet growing sustainability demands.”

TasFarmers also pushed for alignment with national frameworks and stronger farmer input in climate governance, warning that Tasmania risks falling behind without coordinated action.
